So, What Is Dry Needling?
It’s quite simple really. We use a very thin sterile needle and go directly into particular areas of a muscle, often where we find a tight or sensitive point. There is nothing being injected into the muscle, hence the name “dry” needling.
If you’ve never had it before, the needles are much smaller than most people imagine. The initial insertion often isn’t the part people notice much at all. When I get into a tight part of the muscle you can sometimes get a quick twitch or deep ache, and that’s normally the moment somebody looks at me and says, “Okay, I felt that.”
After doing this for 15+ years, you also get pretty good at recognising the patients where it is likely to be useful. There are times when I examine somebody and think straight away that I want to needle a particular muscle. There are other times when somebody has booked specifically for dry needling and I don’t use a needle at all.
A Tight Muscle Isn’t Always the Problem
This is probably the more important part for me. If your calf has tightened up once after a hard run, fine, perhaps you’ve simply overloaded it. If it happens every single time you run more than 8 or 10km, I become much more interested in why that calf keeps having to work so hard.
Maybe you’ve suddenly increased your running. Maybe the ankle isn’t moving well, there is a weakness somewhere or your body has simply found a way of moving that keeps overloading the same area. There are a lot of possibilities and that’s why I don’t want to just needle the calf for 20 minutes and send you on your way.
I had versions of this conversation hundreds of times over the years. Patients will say, “This muscle is always tight,” and my next question is usually why. Tight muscles don’t just exist separately from everything else the body is doing.

Does Dry Needling Actually Help?
For the right person, yes, it can be very useful. I mainly use it when I want to settle a very tight or sensitive muscle, reduce pain and hopefully make movement easier. Sometimes the difference afterwards is actually quite dramatic, and other times it is more subtle.
I like to check the thing that wasn’t working properly before we started. If turning your head to the right was uncomfortable, let’s turn it again. If you felt the calf every time you squatted, do another squat and see what changed.
That’s much more useful to me than just asking if you “feel relaxed.” We’re trying to change something that matters to you.
Dry Needling for People Who Train
Dry needling Dubai is something patients ask me about almost every day at ONE Chiropractic Studio in JLT. I’m Dr Fayrouz, the physiotherapist here, and I’ve been working as a physio for more than 15 years. I’ve used dry needling for a long time, particularly for stubborn muscular problems, sports injuries and those annoying areas that seem to tighten up again no matter how much you stretch them.
Probably a large part of the dry needling I do in Dubai is with people who are active. We get runners, football players, padel and tennis players, CrossFit and Hyrox athletes and a lot of people who are simply in the gym four or five times a week. You don’t need to be a professional athlete to start overloading something.
A very typical patient for me is somebody who is still training but has gradually started changing everything around one problem. They’ve stopped doing one exercise, changed their running, avoid serving hard in padel or spend half an hour warming up because one part of their body is always tight. They’ve managed it themselves for three months and eventually realise it isn’t really going away.
Those cases are often much more interesting than a straightforward injury. The body is very clever and will find ways around things, sometimes for a surprisingly long time. Eventually those compensations can become part of the problem as well.

Dry Needling Benefits and Its Limits
Where It Can Be Useful
People usually talk about dry needling benefits in terms of pain relief, releasing trigger points and improving movement. Those are generally the reasons I use it as well. If somebody has a very irritable or tight muscle and we can get that area calmer and moving more comfortably, it gives us something to work with.
- Persistent muscle tightness or sensitive muscle areas
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Back-related muscular tension
- Sports and overuse problems
- Restricted movement where muscle tightness is contributing
Why the Needle Isn’t the Whole Answer
Where I think people get it wrong is expecting the needle to do everything. If you come in with a calf problem because you’ve gone from running 15km a week to 50km a week, I can needle your calf, but we probably need to talk about your training as well.
If your shoulder keeps getting irritated every time you play padel, I want to look at the shoulder and how you’re moving rather than repeatedly treating the same painful spot.
Dry needling is a tool. A good one, but still a tool.

Dry Needling Side Effects and Safety
The most common dry needling side effect I see is soreness afterwards. Some people barely have any and others feel like they’ve done a fairly hard workout in the muscle we’ve treated. A little bruising or bleeding can happen as well, and occasionally somebody can feel light-headed, especially if they’re already nervous about needles.
There are more serious risks with needling certain parts of the body, which is why anatomy and proper training matter. Fifteen years of treating patients also teaches you that knowing when not to use a technique is just as important as knowing how to do it. If I don’t think dry needling is appropriate, we’ll do something else.
And if you’re terrified of needles, please tell me. I promise I have other options.
Dry needling is an invasive technique and is not appropriate for every person. Your medical history, medication use and individual circumstances should be reviewed before treatment.
Is Dry Needling the Same as Acupuncture?
No, although I understand why people confuse the two. Dry needling vs acupuncture is one of the most common questions I get because visually they can look almost identical. Both use very fine needles, but the reasoning behind where and why we use them is different.
Acupuncture traditionally comes from Chinese medicine and its system of acupuncture points. When I’m using dry needling in physiotherapy, I’m thinking about anatomy, the muscle I’m treating, what I found during the examination and what happens when you move. I’m not needling exactly the same points on every person who walks in with shoulder or back pain.

Neck and Back Pain in JLT
We get a lot of neck and upper-back problems in JLT. That’s probably not surprising when you consider how many people around here spend most of their working day on a laptop and then go straight to the gym afterwards. By the end of the week their neck and shoulders can feel like one solid block.
Dry needling can be really nice for some of these patients, particularly where there is a lot of muscular tension. But again, if you’re sitting in exactly the same position for ten hours every day, I don’t want to pretend a few needles once a week solve the entire situation. We need to look at what else is going on.
I treat lower-back problems in much the same way. Sometimes the muscles themselves need attention and sometimes they’re tight because they’re protecting or compensating for something else. The examination usually gives me a better idea of which one we’re dealing with.
The Nervous System Is Part of This Too
One thing we talk about quite a bit at ONE is how good the body is at adapting. Muscles aren’t operating by themselves; they’re constantly receiving information through the nervous system and changing what they do depending on movement, load, pain, fatigue and everything else happening to you. That’s why two people can have pain in exactly the same place and need completely different treatment.
This is also why I like combining hands-on treatment with movement. If dry needling gives us a window where an area is less painful or moves better, I want to use that. We can then start getting the body comfortable with that movement again rather than endlessly chasing tight muscles.

What Happens When You Come In?
I’ll normally spend the beginning of the appointment asking questions and examining you. I want to know when the problem started, what annoys it, what your normal training looks like and, importantly, what you can’t do now that you could do before. Fifteen years in physiotherapy has made me much more interested in the story around an injury, because there is usually useful information in there.
Then we’ll decide what to do. That might include dry needling, manual therapy, mobility or exercise, and quite often a mixture of them. I’m not particularly interested in giving everybody who comes through the door exactly the same treatment.

Looking for Dry Needling Near Me?
If you’ve ended up here because you searched dry needling near me, we’re in Platinum Tower in JLT, very close to Dubai Marina and JBR. I work alongside the chiropractors at ONE Chiropractic Studio, so we see a fairly broad mixture of spinal, muscular and sports problems.
Having physio and chiropractic under the same roof is useful, particularly when a patient has a problem that isn’t neatly just “a tight muscle.”
ONE has grown quite a bit over the years and in 2026 was named Best Chiropractic Clinic Network – EMEA by Global Health & Pharma. That’s something the whole team is proud of, but it doesn’t change the way I approach somebody coming into my room with a painful shoulder. I still have to work out what is actually going on.

Should You Try Dry Needling?
If you have a muscle that keeps tightening up, an old sports problem that keeps returning or pain that’s beginning to change the way you train or move, it may be worth trying. But I wouldn’t promise that you need dry needling without seeing you first. Sometimes I use it heavily in a treatment and sometimes not at all.
If you’re looking for dry needling in Dubai, come and see me at ONE Chiropractic Studio in JLT. I’ll have a look at what’s going on first, and then we’ll decide what makes sense from there.
