Pregnancy Chiropractor in Dubai
A pregnancy chiropractor can help support your spine, pelvis and nervous system as your body adapts to pregnancy. As your baby grows, your centre of gravity changes, your pelvis becomes more mobile and the way you stand, walk and move can feel completely different.
For some women, those changes happen relatively comfortably. For others, pregnancy brings lower back pain, pelvic discomfort, stiffness or simply the feeling that their body isn’t moving as easily as it did before.
At ONE Chiropractic Studio in Dubai, we provide gentle, individualised chiropractic care throughout pregnancy.
Why see a chiropractor during pregnancy?
Pregnancy is probably one of the greatest examples of adaptation the human body ever goes through. In a matter of months, your body changes enormously to create the space and environment for a growing baby.
Your weight distribution changes, your centre of gravity moves forward and hormonal changes allow the ligaments around your pelvis to become more relaxed. Your spine and pelvis have to continually adapt to all of this, and pre-existing conditions such as scoliosis or a herniated disc may need extra consideration.
Sometimes your body handles it brilliantly. Sometimes it could use a little help.
A pregnancy chiropractor looks at how your spine, pelvis and body are moving rather than simply focusing on where it hurts. At ONE, our goal is to help your body move and adapt as well as possible throughout your pregnancy.
Pregnancy, your back and your pelvis
Lower back and pelvic discomfort, including sciatica, are incredibly common during pregnancy. Research discussed by chiropractor and neuroscientist Dr Heidi Haavik reports that around three-quarters of pregnant women experience pain in their back or pelvis.
And when you think about what’s happening mechanically, it’s not particularly surprising.
Your growing bump moves your centre of gravity forward. Your posture changes to compensate, your pelvis becomes more mobile and you’re progressively carrying more weight at the front of your body.
Chiropractic isn’t about stopping these changes. They’re a normal part of pregnancy. Instead, we look at how well your body is adapting to them.
Can pregnant women go to the chiropractor?
Can pregnant women go to the chiropractor? Yes. Chiropractic care can be modified throughout pregnancy according to your stage of pregnancy, comfort and individual needs. At ONE our chiropractors have taken extensive specialization into pregnancy chiropractic. Indeed, Dr Charlotte ran a pregnancy and paediatric chiropractic practice before moving to Dubai.
As your pregnancy progresses, your chiropractor can change your positioning and the techniques used. The approach we use with someone at 36 weeks pregnant may therefore look quite different from the approach we use with another patient.
There isn’t one standard pregnancy adjustment that everybody receives. We assess the person in front of us first and adapt the care accordingly.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
This is understandably one of the first questions many expecting mothers ask us.
Published research reviewed by Dr Heidi Haavik and Dr Kelly Holt suggests chiropractic care during pregnancy is generally considered safe when appropriately delivered. Chiropractors can also modify their care to the individual patient and stage of pregnancy.
At ONE, that individual approach is important. We want you to understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and to feel comfortable throughout your appointment.
What can a pregnancy chiropractor help with?
Many pregnant women initially visit us because something has started to hurt. Lower back discomfort, pelvic pain and difficulty moving comfortably are common reasons.
But our assessment isn’t limited to the painful area. We look at how your spine and pelvis are moving, how your body is compensating and how those changes may be affecting the way you function.
Pregnancy isn’t a problem that needs fixing. Our role is to support your body while it does something it is already remarkably well designed to do.
If physiotherapy would add value alongside your chiropractic care, both services are available in house, including sports physiotherapy for active mothers-to-be and complementary therapies such as lymphatic drainage or cupping therapy where appropriate. Not sure whether you need a physio or chiropractor? We can help you decide.
Chiropractor and pregnancy: what does the research say?
Research into chiropractor and pregnancy care is still developing. One study followed 115 pregnant women who visited a chiropractor with lower back pain. More than half reported improvement after one week, around 70% after one month and approximately 90% reported improvement by the end of the study.

Chiropractic and the nervous system during pregnancy
At ONE, chiropractic has never been only about back pain. Your brain and nervous system are constantly receiving information from your body and using it to coordinate movement and adaptation. Your spine provides an enormous amount of sensory information that contributes to this process.
This relationship between the spine, brain and nervous system has been an important area of research for New Zealand chiropractor and neuroscientist Dr Heidi Haavik.
Chiropractic adjustments influence sensory information coming from the spine into the nervous system. That’s one reason our approach looks beyond simply chasing symptoms and considers how your whole body is moving and adapting.
What about the pelvic floor?
There has also been some fascinating research looking at chiropractic and pelvic floor function during pregnancy.
In a New Zealand study, researchers measured pelvic floor muscle function in pregnant women before and after a chiropractic adjustment. They found that the women’s pelvic floor muscles appeared to relax more at rest following the adjustment.
It’s an interesting finding because the ability of the pelvic floor to both contract and relax is important during childbirth. However, it was a small study and doesn’t mean chiropractic can guarantee an easier labour or delivery.
For us, it’s another interesting piece of the much bigger picture of how the spine, nervous system, pelvis and body interact.
What happens at your first appointment?
Your first appointment starts with a conversation. We want to know how far along you are, what has changed, whether you’re experiencing discomfort and what you’d like help with.
Your chiropractor will then assess your movement, spine and pelvis. We’ll explain what we’re seeing and, if chiropractic care is appropriate for you, discuss what we recommend.
There is no conveyor-belt approach at ONE. Every pregnancy is different, and your chiropractic care should reflect that.
Do I need to be in pain to see a pregnancy chiropractor?
No. In fact, many women choose to see a pregnancy chiropractor because they want to prepare their body as well as possible for birth, not because something hurts.
Birth asks a lot of your body. Your pelvis needs to move and adapt, while your pelvic floor needs to be able to contract when needed and, just as importantly, relax to allow your baby to move through the birth canal.
This is where chiropractic gets particularly interesting. Research from New Zealand found that after pregnant women were adjusted by a chiropractor, their pelvic floor muscles appeared to relax more when at rest. Researchers suggested this may give women better control of their pelvic floor muscles and potentially help during childbirth.
There is also research reporting shorter average labour times in women who received chiropractic care during pregnancy. While that doesn’t mean chiropractic can guarantee an easier or faster birth, it adds to the growing interest in how good pelvic function, movement and nervous system function may support the birth process.
So you certainly don’t need to wait until your back hurts. For many of the pregnant women we see at ONE, chiropractic is part of looking after their body throughout pregnancy and helping them feel as physically prepared and confident as possible heading into birth.
